Herb Harvest

With the girls' help yesterday, I got in the last of my herb harvest. Mostly tea herbs, with a few culinary ones, too. I spent hour upon hour researching this spring and summer on herbs. I haven't harvested my 'medicinal' herbs yet. The tea ones are all sorts of good medicine too, but I planted a few more specific ones. Lady's Mantle, Dead Nettle and Heal-All. In the sun-room in my house I have Skullcap and Lavender, and I'm still trying to get some Black Cohosh to germinate. It's been tricky for me.

I see that one of the herbs you are growing is Lady's mantle. I have some near one of my birdbaths, unfortunately the deer think it is great. What do humans use it for??

Lady's Mantle is used for all sorts of Lady's complaints :o) The funniest is to remedy, "over-flagging breasts", according to Culpeper. That was the advice way back in the day. More modern uses are for problems with pms, menopause, menstrual complaints and it's used for women who are having a hard time getting pregnant. It's also good for wounds as it helps slow bleeding.
Another old belief was that when you captured the silvery dew that collects at the base of the accordion leaves, it worked like the Philosophers Stone - turning things into gold.
There you go, Lady's Mantle, 101.
